Students and Staff React to New Lunch Schedule Changes

One of the biggest changes to Park View High School this school year was the new lunch schedule. This decision happened during the summer before the beginning of this school year. There was a two-day leadership team retreat at Park View, which included teachers and administrators. One of the things that was discussed during this retreat was moving the lunch block due to the 15 minute later start time. The leadership team made a pros and cons list and voted anonymously to decide this year’s lunch schedule.

“We did some research, and there were several schools going down that road of changing their lunch schedules because of the 15 minutes that was added on,” stated Dr.Jefferson, the principal of Park View High School. “We thought about our students who come looking throughout the day for snacks and what impact that would have on us, on our athletes, and the people who had D lunch.”

The change affects students and staff in different ways, and there’s a mix of opinions on the new schedule.

Some students like the new lunch schedule due to D lunch starting way earlier than it did last year. They don’t have to wait as long as they used to wait for lunch anymore.

“Last year I would have D lunch and we wouldn’t eat until 1:58pm, and so the majority of the kids who had D lunch would go hours without eating anything,” said Ohana Ahmed, a Park View Junior who had D lunch every day her sophomore year.

A reason why students don’t like the new lunch schedule is because of how early A lunch starts, which is at 11:08am. Typically, students eat before coming to school so when they get to school and have to eat A lunch, they’re not hungry since they recently ate.

“I eat before I go to school, so once I get to school and I get A lunch I’m not hungry then I don’t eat until after school, and my stomach is hurting throughout the whole day,” stated Geo Rodriguez, a junior at Park View.

Some teachers like the feeling of lunch being closer to the middle of the day.

“Since we start school at 9:30am, you should be able to eat a nice breakfast before, then you are having lunch towards the middle of the day, and that kind of breaks up our day with only two blocks afterwards,” stated Mr. Bailey, an economics teacher and SCA sponsor at Park View.

On the other hand, some teachers do not take a strong liking to the new lunch schedule due to it being too early. This results in the teachers having to eat snacks throughout the day just to get by.

“We went from having D lunch at 1:58pm to now having D lunch at 12:38pm, so by the time we get to 4th block everybody’s hungry all over again,” said Ms. Eckert, a PE teacher at Park View.
